Agios Nikolaos

Overview of Agios Spiridon

North East Corfu Island, Corfu Island

The church of St. Spyridon in Corfu island is featuring the tallest tower in Corfu that can be seen in the background. Built in 1596, the body of Saint Spyridon rests in the church after arriving in Corfu in 1456. Before then it was kept in other churches. Ceiling docorations originally consisted of gold plated wood carved by P. Doxaras who took until 1727 to complete the work. Lack of preservation meant the decorations where replaced later by Nicolaos Aspiotis. Four annual processions take place from the church, the one on August 11 marks the date the Turks abandoned the siege of Corfu in 1716.
Agios Spiridon has two beautiful bays overlooking the dramatic hills of Albania. As soon as you reach the bay at the bottom of he road the turquoise of the sea stuns you, this is truly a stunning bay with the flatness of the beach offset by the ruggedness of the rock either side of the two beaches.
Agos Spiridon is known in the North East of Corfu as a nature reserve. The reserve is just a short walk or drive along from the beaches.
